In early drafts, this was the ending of issue 1. But everything felt too rushed and I wanted more ch bits, so I stretched it out. I also like how the Nazi’s first act of freedom is offhand killing a jew he coerced into obeying him. That’s as evil as it gets. Seems a shame that in this day and age we need reminders of that.
Killing a random stranger without reason would be more evil. Killing a random child without reason would be more evil than that. Killing someone purely because of their race or sex would be more evil (in this case, it was more “bonus points”).
This is a guy he bribed into betraying his duty. His point that the guy would likely betray him, too, eventually, is spot on. I’d call that “fairly run-of-the-mill evil” (with a few evil bonus points on the side).
Just seems like the usual ” you have outlived your usefulness/chronic backstabbing disorder ” trope to me. I doubt he was ever going to pay the guard in full or even let him keep it. ” Young Eminem ” is a villain that plays the long game ( literally ) and now that he’s free, he doesn’t need the guard anymore. Stooges are always expendable. Anyway, hope things really pick up in issue # 3.
Most people will die before they betray their highest ideals in one go. Even people that have to be seduced into it can’t be trusted. Someone who will betray everything they ever stood for immediately will do it again as soon as they would get even a tiny advantage by doing so. Keeping someone like that around when any betrayal might undo everything you have worked for?
That’s the sort of mistake that makes it into the “I Will Not” section of the Evil Overlord List.
The guard held no love for the job because his pay was about to get docked, which is somewhat implied to be crappy since he mentioned ” young Em’s ” cell was better than his whole apartment (#tragic ). Young Em only had to mention the opportunity of being rich once and the guard was hooked. That doesn’t paint the picture of a devoted employee who has really bought into the idea of what their position stands for, especially a law enforcement official. Also, nobody who manipulates people for their own ends and then betrays them after they have gotten what they were after cares about loyalty. “Heath Ledger ” Joker didn’t instruct his henchmen to kill each other out of fear of betrayal when they were robbing the mob bank during the Dark Knight opening. He had them kill each other because they were all a means to end. After they had served their purpose, they were loose ends that had to be taken care of. Therefore, why not have them all kill each other rather than have to do himself ?
that’s not 100% right, the dark knight reference. remember that Heaths joker was all about revealing that everyone was like him, basically an extreme version of jokers philosophy in “a killing joke”. he wanted to prove that everyone was just as ugly as he was, just he never got to hide it. he had them kill each other because it was in there nature, no honor among thieves.
One of the thieves says he killed another one of his accomplices because the Joker specifically told him to. If the Joker figured the thieves were going to kill each other anyway, that detail would’ve never come up in conversation. Also, the getaway driver even seems surprised when only the Joker is there when he shows up.
You want a fun “good/evil/really evil” conversation? [evil grin]
This guy’s an unrepentant murderer. Justice would be execution. Life in prison might be an acceptable alternative, maybe, especially if you don’t trust the government with the power of execution.
But he’s clearly made a mockery of the government justice system.
What’s a truly good person to do about this situation? Executing him yourself would be extra-judicial… but not inherently unjust, and the judicial system has failed.
Even if you consider executing him yourself would be murder, it’s unbelievable that the number of people he’s going to murder in the future is zero, so you’re at least minimizing the number of murders.
You want to be a force for good in the world… what do you do?
(Now I laugh evilly, go make some popcorn, and pull up a comfy chair.)
Wow, no takers. I was hoping for interesting discussion. Bummer.
Back to just enjoying the great comic, I guess.
Huh, first place I can comment since I started.
I re-found “Our Supermom” a while ago, and binged it yesterday. Today I binged “Delta Dawn” and as of yet I have not been disappointed.
Well, not entirely true. I want more Gail, I love that little kid and the note she left for “Mr. Evil Guy” was priceless. Still, turns out there is a bit more for me to catch up on. Tomorrow I might end up binging “Hardcase”
That’s a favorite of several readers i’ve met at shows. Glad you enjoyed it. Hardcase was my first completed comic. I learned a lot doing it. Including a lot of what not to do.
