All artwork for Scott Comics is freelance. You can inquire about most of the artists by contacting me (Scott Bachmann) at scott(a)scottcomics.com. I’m often asked how I find artists, so I’ve mentioned in a few cases where we’ve met and where they are from. My artists are international.

William Grapes

I met Will because he’s always hanging around Cinci shows sharing a table with Brett. When I commissioned Brett to do the pencils for some Raymond Hardcase covers, Will did the inks. He also gave me a sketch of Liza that I included in the first Our Super Mom trade. We talked about doing several side projects together for his comics, but timing never panned out. When It came time to do Delta Dawn I searched for an artist for over a year, then I woke up one day remembered “Hey! Will!”. Expecting nothing to come of it, I contacted him and he loved the pitch. Now boom. Here we are.
WJ Grapes currently writes and draws the Infernal Fyre-Dragon, as well as inks the Silver Bullet, both for Markosia. In addition, he’s produced record covers for such bands as the Nomads, Man or Astro-Man?, and the Insomniacs. Occasionally he sleeps.

Nate Lovett

Nate has done a ton of shows with me, but for some reason we never connected. At Gem City last year I found out my colorist couldn’t continue due to life changing events and I had to scramble to find a colorist. Nate was literally in from of me, and I knew he did colors among many things. I got brave and pitched it to him and to my surprise he said yes. When Our Super Mom ended I begged him to stay on. Then to my amazement he pitched a cover and my logo when I was looking for open submissions, and killed it. He doesn’t know this, but I am never letting him get away.
Heidi Black
I met Heidi at the ICE convention and chatted her up because I loved her Pokemon shirt. She told me she’d designed it, and I looked at the rest of her art and it was amazing. I’d already written the script for the book as was planning to illustrate it myself. Test art was coming out awful. But when I saw Heidi’s style, I knew she was a perfect match for what I wanted. I then talked her into it and we reworked the entire book. We now co-own the book.

Dan Butcher

I met Dan through his wife’s sardonic comic and her hilarious twitter feed. Turns out we were also both a part of Collective of Heroes. Apparently an ocean couldn’t keep us apart. (He’s English and I’m American, it’s like the odd couple without the neat and clean one.)
In Dan’s words:
Butcher is a trained illustrator/designer who has worked in small press comics for over 10 years. His current long-term project, VANGUARD, is a Brit-based superhero webcomic and is currently up to issue 11 at the time of printing.

Joel Carpenter

Joel is from England and he owes me a pint next time I’m over there. That’s after not connecting the first time I was there. He’s illustrated ‘Tales from the Black Museum‘ for the Judge Dredd Magazine and does work for 2000AD and DC comics.

Antonio Cezar Jr.

I met Antonio through Ozzy. We’ve never spoken or chatted directly. Antonio’s a colorist extraordinaire and has worked on several Gemini Comics tittles such as Nathaniel Demon, Sails of Blood and Project: Noah’s Ark. He is a robot from the future and he lives in Brazil.

Jeremy Colwell

Jeremy is a freelance colorist doing work for a variety of companies including Image. He’s also a father, husband, and generally nice guy. When not staring at his Cintiq coloring, he’s playing video games or spending time with his family. He doesn’t do much else.

Sean Forney

Sean Forney is a powerhouse. He’s at every show in the midwest clearing out the monies before they get to my table. Fortunately he has Stephanie to manage all the raining cash. And she’s a talented artist too.
Despite this, I never thought to hire Sean until I saw his Post-it sketches on FaceBook. For warmups, Sean was drawing famous characters in close-up on Post-its, and they were stunning. I thought it would be a great way to showcase my cast of characters so I threw money at him. I call him $ean behind his back.
Sean’s Bio:
Sean Forney is a thirteen year professional illustrator/comic book artist currently working on Zen: Intergalactic Ninja for Devil’s Due/1First Comics (Due out Oct. 2015) and Cyberines #3 (Red Anvil Comics). His recent color work can be seen on the cover of Bloodstrike (Image Comics). Cover and interior work can also be seen in Archaea (Devil’s Due/1First Comics), Deadpooh (Comi-Kazi), Cyberines #1 (Red Anvil Comics), Notti & Nyce and Do You Pooh? Ross Hughes

I met Ross through Scott Simmons. Simmons begged me to try out Ross for colors of his pencils, and I’m glad I did. This Texan has been a workhorse and frequently over delivers in quality.

Marisa Livingston

Marisa created our cover for issue 1 of Our Super Mom. I found her on DeviantArt and loved her work. She was amazingly easy to work with and very professional. Her art was so stunning it’s been my main marketing material, and I reused the art for the cover of the first trade paperback.

I met Ozzy through a FaceBook creator group. Ozzy Longoria is the owner of Gemini Comics, he does comic books and graphic novels and fights crime at night.

Rose McClain
- Our Super Mom – cover issue 6
I met Rose through her uncle Jim McClain. Jim makes comics about super heroes and math the Solution Squad. Jim and I hit it off right away, and I featured his comic in a cameo of issue 6 of Our Super Mom. When it came time to do a cover, I asked Jim if he was interested. He politely declined and said Rose was who I wanted as she was his main artist. Rose hit a homer the second she stepped up to plate.

Hanie Mohd

Hanie missed by ONE day the chance to do the first cover for Our Super Mom, and jumped at the chance to do the second issue’s cover. Check out her amazing Wonder Woman all dressed up in her DeviantArt gallery or her adorable Bat Girls.
Hanie is from Malaysia and I met her via Twitter. People were passing around her amazing art and I knew I wanted to work with her so I tracked her down. Despite language barriers and timezones, we made it work. Hanie’s work is also in Womanthology.

Jacob Newell

I’ve never met Jacob in person. I commissioned him through studio Akumakaze, we emailed, he was a pro and delivered. I’ve tried to run into him at several cons, and he’s never there when I stop by. I’ve even had to leave his comp copies with his friends who insist he does exist and is not hiding from me.

Matthew Pogues

I met Matthew at a local con and noticed his art was great but no one was noticing him. I couldn’t figure it out. Several cons later he asks me why I’ve never commissioned him for a cover. I said, I don’t know why. Long story short, we have the cover for issue 9.
Anthony Redell
- The Paragon of Animals 3rd Ed – Cover Photography

Anthony was a fan of Paragon and had said hi a few times at shows. I even offered to stash his photography equipment under my table while he had lunch. When I finished the second novel I knew I wanted to make the covers match and have a similar style. I also had to put out a new edition of Paragon for “reasons” of the legal kind. So I pitched my idea to Anthony and asked his thoughts. He said he loved it and he wanted to take the pictures. What followed was an amazingly long and complicated process of finding the right models for hand shots. Anthony gave me dozens of filter choices and poses and went above and beyond. When I showed him the finished covers, he noticed some slight imperfections and redid the photo art for me. He’s a true perfectionist and it shows.

I hunted for two years to find an artist for Our Super Mom. At the first Cinci Comic Expo I was there as press for Comic Hero News. As I went around interviewing artists I saw Scott’s promo art for Knights of Power and knew immediately he had the style I needed. Being named Scott was also a plus.
Scott’s Bio:
Scott D.M. Simmons is a freelance comic book and sketch card illustrator, known for his artwork for Star Wars licensees, the Arcana graphic novel The Dead Cell, indie comics like Our Super Mom, Halloween Man, and Hero Chronicles, and his creator-owned series Knights of P.O.W.E.R. His inking work has appeared in Image Comics’ recent Hack/Slash collected volumes and in various Halloween Man stories. His sketch card artwork has appeared in sets for Star Wars, Dynamo 5, Zombies Versus Cheerleaders, Sheena, Golden Age of Comics, and more, with base card art also done for a few sets. He has contributed art for Moonstone’s Voltron: United and Drawn, New Comic Day, and Mr. Jigsaw. Other credits include Wannabez, Jenny Everywhere, Mute, Global Comic Jam, as well as various CDs, magazines, and educational books. He was once a photographer at Hasbro Toys, and is also a news and photo contributor for Comic Related. Scott and his wife live in the Cincinnati, Ohio area.

Mark Smith Jr.

Mark Smith Jr. is an Omaha-based comic book illustrator and was our first interior artist for Raymond Hardcase. Other published works include the web comic, “Kingdom of the Dwarves,” and the graphic novel, “If Money Could Shout”. Mark had to leave Hardcase after the birth of his darling Covey, who makes a cameo in the water fountain in Chicago’s Millennium park in issue 3.

Matthew Sparks

Matthew is a comicbook artist, illustrator and aspiring wrestling belt maker. He took over on Hardcase after doing some fill in scenes for us. Mat approached me at a con for a portfolio review and I saw he had potential. He’s also done our character turnarounds and provided additional art for our Character Roster.

Jenny Stead

Our cover artist for Our Super Mom issue 3 is Jenny Stead. She was thrilled to get the offer to do the cover.
I yanked the following bio from her own comic site:
Jenny M. Stead, is a self taught artist from London, KY who’s been drawing since age 4. Her signature character, Ally, from her comic Ninja’d, is based on her, and has been since age 16 when Ally was created for her High School Senior Project. Jenny loves to write and draw. She’s currently taken on freelance work of all kinds as both a sketch card artist and a character concept designer. Jenny is both published with Facebook and Pink Floyd and has had her work in independent film in the past. On the side, she’s an aunt of the two cutest and greatest nieces in the whole world, a sister, a daughter, and a best friend to many people both in her home life and web life. Jenny is known to be random, eccentric, blunt, and dangerous on caffeine. Oddly enough she’s rarely moody like her cartoon counterpart, but more like her other character, Ted, in personality.

Scott Story
- Raymond Hardcase – Pencils/inks issue 1 2nd Edition
My very first con I was at the end of a row with a Scott behind me and Scott Story to my left. With my Scottcomics banner we became the Scott corner and since Scott has a cult following, they all thought my banner was his. We’ve been friends ever since. His delightful wife and cowriter is also a pleasure to talk to if you can get her to stop spinning on her spinning wheel. Scott is also one of the founders of Collective of Heroes, and he brought me into that group.
Scott made the cover for issue 1 of Hardcase, the second edition. We’ve tried to get together several times on a cover, but our schedules never lined up. When I went to rework issue 1, the stars aligned. Scott is the artist and cowriter with his wife Benita of the popular and long running comic Johnny Saturn.

Meg Syverud

Our cover for issue 4 of Our Super Mom was done by Meq Syverud, whom I met at the Appleseed convention, and loved the work I saw.
As she describes herself:
Meg Syverud is a hobbit who is often buried under piles of paper, pen and Copic markers. Armed with an ancient Intuos 2 and trusty marker, she had done various sequential arts and cover arts – most recently for Womanthology (published by IDW), pinup art for The Last Unicorn graphic novel, as well as thousands of sketch cards of licensed properties by Marvel, DC, Dynamite and FX Networks. In her free time she likes to dress up superheroes in alternative outfits in art noveau settings.

Bill Walko

I’d been a fan of Bill’s for a while and we were both part of Collective of Heroes so I introduced myself at a con in New York. We hit it off at once. Since then I’ve written several short guest comics for his comic, the Hero Business, and he’s done the same for me.

Sarah Wilkinson
- Eat The Bunny Before the Bunny Eats You
I met Sarah through a mutual set of friends. She was dating the pirate artist Nigel did the cover of the no longer published first edition of The Paragon of Animals (long story, and not Nigel’s fault). Nigel has a big booth at the Ohio Renaissance Fair and when he’s in town he crashes at mutual friends house. When I came up with the idea for the book, I’d already seen Sarah’s art and knew she’d be perfect. I ran the book concept past Nigel’s kids and they loved the premise and Sarah jumped at the chance to work on it. We now co-own the book.
Brett Wood
- Raymond Hardcase – cover pencils issue 4-5
I met Brett at lord knows what convention. I just remember it was dead and we had nothing better to do than shoot the breeze. We’ve worked together on a comic that never saw the light of day because neither of us had time to finish it. Maybe one you’ll see our combined weirdness. Brett is a comic artist who work includes The Silver Bullet issues 1-9, and Devil Dealers 112 page graphic novel, both from Markosia, as well as some work for Arcana Studios.
